To quit (close) a Mac app normally, choose Quit from the app's menu in the menu bar, or press Command (⌘)-Q. If the app doesn't quit, follow these steps to force the app to quit.
How to force an app to quit
- You have to hold the keys for few seconds and all the apps that are not responding on your Mac will be closed. Be careful: Please take a note that all the apps which are running might get closed. So use this option only when you want to close all the applications on your Mac.
- Select the app and click on the “Force Quit” button to close the app. Unlike Windows 10, macOS will prompt you to confirm the force quitting of an app. Again, click on the “Force Quit” button to confirm the closure of the unresponsive app.
Normally, if you want to close all of the open apps on your Mac, you'd have to either quit them all one by one or restart, shut down, or log out while making sure to deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.' When an app is running, you can simply right-click on an app from the Mac’s application Dock and a pop-up menu appears. From this pop-up menu, select the Quit option and the app will quit. Following this gesture, the black dot underneath the app should disappear, indicating the app has been terminated.

Then select the app in the Force Quit window and click Force Quit.
You can even force the Finder to quit, if it stops responding: Select Finder in the Force Quit window, then click Relaunch.

Use Launchpad to delete an app
Launchpad offers a convenient way to delete apps that were downloaded from the App Store.
- To open Launchpad, click it in the Dock or open it from your Applications folder. You can also pinch closed with your thumb and three fingers on your trackpad.
- If you don't see the app in Launchpad, type its name in the search field at the top of the screen. Or swipe right or left with two fingers on your trackpad to show the next or previous page.
- Press and hold the Option (⌥) key, or click and hold any app until the apps jiggle.
- Click next to the app that you want to delete, then click Delete to confirm. The app is deleted immediately. Apps that don't show either didn't come from the App Store or are required by your Mac. To delete an app that didn't come from the App Store, use the Finder instead.

Use the Finder to delete an app
- Locate the app in the Finder. Most apps are in your Applications folder, which you can open by clicking Applications in the sidebar of any Finder window. Or use Spotlight to find the app, then press and hold the Command (⌘) key while double-clicking the app in Spotlight.
- Drag the app to the Trash, or select the app and choose File > Move to Trash.
- If you're asked for a user name and password, enter the name and password of an administrator account on your Mac. This is probably the name and password you use to log in to your Mac.
- To delete the app, choose Finder > Empty Trash.
